Dear Mr.
Goldin,
We have
recently received a copy of NASA Facts On Line publication,
"The Blended-Wing-Body". We wish to point out serious,
historical errors in its content:
At the bottom
of Page 1, it is stated: "This revolutionary
configuartion, called BWB for short, was conceived by the
McDonnell Douglas Corporation.
.." This
statement is not factually correct, for the configuration is
simply a reprodcution of the Lifting Body configuration, laid
down by our company founder, Mr. Vincent Justus Burnelli,
during the 1940s. Please see the accompanying comparison
of 1951 model with the McDonnell Douglas BWB.
At the bottom of Page 3, it is stated:
"The BWB program is examining a new method for engine
installation that promises to increase safety and fuel
efficiency
." This statement
is not facutally correct, as Mr. Burnelli not only invented
this very engine installation in the mid 1940s, but he applied
for a patent on this invention on September 11, 1945.
Patent #2,586,299 was issued to Mr. Burnelli for this
invention on February 19, 1952 (see the enclosed "All-Wing
Design").
We herewith request that NASA promptly issue a correction
to the above falsifications by giving Mr. Burnelli credit for
both the configuration and the engine installation.
We look forward to receiving a copy of the NASA Facts On
Line correction without delay.
Thank you and
best wishes for 1998.
Yours
sincerely,
Chalmers H. Goodlin
